Desso carpets have been installed in the new Cunard 'Queen Elizabeth' liner, which was officially named by Her Majesty The Queen this month. The £435m luxury liner has been created with high level design in mind, featuring a number of art deco flourishes to celebrate the era of 1930s ocean liners. The floors are critical to this plan, which is why Desso's high quality, bespoke carpets were selected as a design element in a number of areas, including the corridors and state rooms.
The ship features grand public rooms with wood panelling, chandeliers and marble. 'Queen Elizabeth' is the successor to the first ship of the same name, launched in 1938. The naming ceremony took place on 11th October 2010, and was also attended by Oscar-winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley and human rights campaigner Terry Waite. Classical singer Lesley Garratt was also present, and sung 'Amazing Grace' at the ceremony.
Approximately 13,200 m2 of tailor-made Axminster woven carpets were designed and manufactured by Desso for the corridors, the prestigious state rooms and various public areas such as grand lobbies, shops, conference rooms, card rooms, etc.

Also, Desso is ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and EN9100 certified. In short, the quality and extent of its product range means that Desso is able to offer a complete package for the floor covering of an entire vessel, anywhere in the world.

Aside from cutting-edge design and impeccable quality standards, Desso's products are also on their way to becoming Cradle to Cradle®. By 2020, Desso's aim is for all products to be made from pure components that are easy to disassemble, in order to create new products (= up cycling) in both the biological and technical cycles. They will also be produced using manufacturing processes which rely on renewable energy, seek to conserve water and embrace social responsibility. Customers can then be sure that products are made from environmentally friendly pure materials that are good for human health, and are designed so that at the end of their useful lives they can be biologically or technically recycled.
