DESSO® enhances its Eco-Intelligent carpet tile range, Reclaim Ribs

27 April 2010

Leading European carpet manufacturer, Desso, has enhanced its ecologically-intelligent carpet tile collection, Reclaim Ribs, by extending its colour range to offer 16 options. This popular choice of carpet tile is designed for a range of environments that demand durability and a sustainable choice.

Reclaim Ribs is made from 100% Econyl Aquafil solution-dyed nylon with a pile fibre consisting of 70% post-industrial recycled content. With the primary backing (Colbond SMR) made up of up to 80% recycled PET-bottles. This is a prime example of product and interior design working together towards supporting environmental awareness and corporate responsibility.

Reclaim Ribs is inspired by elements of nature, such as the shapes found in wood, clay, minerals and water. The combination of irregular structure and colour adds depth and dimension offering an array of options for a wide choice of environments. The Reclaim Ribs carpet tile has a subtle rib effect, an organically linear pattern which helps to create a natural yet distinctive interior for any commercial environment.

Dark anthracite was used as the basis for the colour palette in this range. A vast choice of neutral shades, such as beiges and browns to greys and blues are available. A selection of brighter colours, such as red and orange, completes the collection. The neutral colours make it easy to combine with other interior elements such as furniture, textiles and lighting. While the vibrant shades provide contemporary style for accent areas. Colours in the range have been specially developed for Desso. All yarn used for Reclaim Ribs carpet tiles have a minimum of 70% post industrial recycled content.

Reclaim Ribs is one of the first carpet tiles to receive a stamp from independent German test institute, GUI . The GUI stamp certifies that a product effectively reduces fine dust indoors. Reclaim Ribs is the perfect choice for applications where ecological awareness is of paramount importance, as well as enhanced occupant comfort.

Alexander Collot d'Escury, Desso Chief Commercial Officer, comments: "This independent certification of Reclaim Ribs is testament to our ongoing commitment to producing innovative designs and ensuring our products promote a positive impact on people and the environment."

Polyamide 6 yarn 'waste' can be used as nutrient for new (Econyl70) yarn. Aquafil produces and guarantees its ecological Econyl 70 yarn with a minimum of 70% post industrial recycled content. The recyclable material is reclaimed, collected and then flows back into the production process together with 30% of virgin polymer. Aquafil Econyl70 yarns are certified with the DNV logo (Det Norske Veritas). DNV is a Norwegian company that focuses on managing risks with the objective to safeguard life, property and the environment. Product certification by DNV stands for safe and sustainable products, taking into consideration the complete lifecycle of a product.

Reclaim Ribs has been introduced with Desso's Cradle to Cradle philosophy in mind. Desso is certified by the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA) for its commitment to the Cradle to Cradle design methodology. Desso has become the first carpet manufacturer in EMEA to adopt the EPEA's Cradle to Cradle philosophy. The Cradle to Cradle principle is focused on 'upcycling'. Products are made from pure components that are easy to disassemble in order to create new products in both the biological and technical cycles.
